Chapter Twenty-Three

Seyer

“Angel?” I stared at the idle game of virtual pool I played with The Phantom Angel. “Angel,” I sang. “Are you there?” I couldn’t do anything until she made her move. “Tori?” I immediately slapped a hand over my mouth.

“Oh shit,” I mumbled, took off my headset, and shoved my computer to the side. “No-no-no-no ...”

I tiptoed across the hall and carefully widened the gap in her door. Tori was fast asleep, and I stopped holding my breath. She hadn’t heard me.

I stepped lightly. For the third time that day, I had found her asleep. I took off her headset, expecting her eyes to pop open or her hand to jut out and slap my cheek. I moved her laptop, which was close to slipping to the floor, and placed it on her nightstand gingerly, then pulled the blanket over her. She moaned, wiggled a bit beneath the warmth, and then let out a contented sigh.

Despite her weakened state, she was beautiful in slumber. Her long hair laid in soft curls about her body. And I couldn’t stop thinking about the black lace panties I had gotten a peek of. In the past, I would have taken advantage ... climbed into bed, and pressed my luck ... but this was My Angel. The woman I had been crazy about long before ... yeah, I knew.

Ethan had always claimed that he and Hillary were destined to be together. I dismissed it as a load of crap. Until Ethan had a run-in with an avatar, whose alias matched that of his Chatter Chick. She had left his character decapitated and a calling card that made Ethan’s head spin and his infatuation stronger.

I didn’t know it at the time, but that had been the beginning of my own unraveling.

Ethan and I had different friends in the game. He preferred the military war realm of Miytia, while I conquered the streets of Granota, where I was a notorious mafia boss.

But there was this one character, in particular, that I had grown quite fond of. A sexy little vixen from Wickora. She had come out of the shadows late one night. I hadn’t been able to sleep, so I had logged on and unfortunately found myself out-gamed and outnumbered.

My character was seconds away from an inevitable death when she suddenly appeared and unleashed a cloud of dark smoke that took the form of an ebony angel. It engulfed my assassins, paralyzing them long enough for me to pull my weapon and take them out. We had been friends ever since. And I honestly liked her, more than I had ever liked a woman.

I told her things I had never shared with anyone else, but she had always been just part of the game. Nothing more. Until ... that night.

Angel had sent me a private message via email. As always, I dropped everything to grab my laptop and join her in Torel, but when I met up with her, I was utterly shocked.

She and I both possessed one-half of a magical amulet, the Cailleach Remorse.
